In September, millions of children return to school. For many, it means seeing friends, books, and teachers again. But for children in the most vulnerable contexts, going back to school also means having a daily meal again.

In Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, one in two people suffers from hunger.
Since 2024, the situation has worsened dramatically: armed violence has made access to education, healthcare, water, and food even more difficult.

Amid the chaos, La Salle schools remain open.
In Port-de-Paix, in the north of the country, the École Saint Jean Baptiste de La Salle welcomes 350 vulnerable children.
Many come from families who send them to work in the city in exchange for shelter. They often face abuse, hunger, and neglect.

In the morning, they are forced to do domestic work, and only in the afternoon can they attend classes. Some arrive at school in tears, wearing torn clothes and shoes. In many cases, it is the Brothers themselves who personally provide clothing and footwear. Some children have told us they chose to come to school because of the hot meal—since in the places where they live, they barely get anything to eat. With no means of transport, many walk several kilometers every day to reach school.

Providing them with a safe, welcoming, and nourishing environment is the first step toward ensuring a dignified future—free from abuse and exploitation—and toward raising citizens capable of contributing to the rebirth of Haiti.
